Oppenheimer Playground to open soon, officials say

Jun. 20—SUNBURY — The popular Oppenheimer Playground will open as soon as a new pump and motor arrive.

The unit has been on order for weeks, according to Councilman Jim Eister. He said it should be in Sunbury in the next few days.

"Once we get this it will be a few more days but then we will be open," he said.

Eister said he understands the frustration, but the city is doing all they can to get the free playground on Second Street open.

"And we got hit with a heat wave at the same time this happened," he said. "So we all understand and are doing the best we can to get the playground up and running."

Eister said once the unit arrives and is installed and working, the city will make an announcement so people are aware.

Eister said the pump and motor were not something that could be purchased locally, and that he has been in contact with the manufacturer on a regular basis for updates.

"We appreciate everyone reaching out to us at City Hall and again we are working as fast as we can to get this fixed so the children can go and enjoy the rest of the summer months at the park," he said.

Eister said in the meantime, he encourages people to visit the Sunbury Community Pool to cool off during the heat wave.

"The pool is in perfect shape and we hope to see everyone go there and enjoy the hot days in the water," he said.
