Owner of Plymouth's Caviston Agency ordered to trial over embezzlement charges

LANSING — The operator of a Plymouth insurance agency has been bound over to face trial in Wayne County on felony embezzlement charges, the Michigan Attorney General's Office announced Friday.

Nancy Caviston, 76, of Superior Charter Township in Washtenaw County, who is charged with two felony counts of embezzlement by an agent, $1,000-$20,000, and two misdemeanor counts of wage and fringe benefit violations, is scheduled for trial in Wayne County's 3rd Circuit Court on July 12.

She faces five years in prison on each of the felony counts, and up to 90 days on the misdemeanor charges, the attorney general's office said in a release.

Caviston, operator of The Caviston Agency Inc., a Plymouth insurance firm, misappropriated payroll deductions of two long-term employees, meant to serve as IRA contribution withholdings, and used them toward her personal and business expenses, the attorney general's office said. She also failed to make the required employer matching contributions toward those IRA accounts.

The investigation into Caviston was conducted by the federal Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration.

“Payroll and benefit fraud often lurk undetected for years,” said Nessel. “Unsuspecting and hardworking employees should be able to trust their employers without worry of being victimized by them.

Caviston was arraigned on the charges in 35th District Court in January and released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

According to the company's website, Caviston has worked in the insurance industry since 1967, and opened Caviston Agency as co-founder of in 1981.

The biography says she has served on various boards, PCAC Plymouth Community Arts Council, Superior Township Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors for Kiwanis.
