Police say a man was killed late Wednesday night when his vehicle collided with a moose on the Trans-Canada Highway in Terra Nova National Park.

In a statement Thursday, RCMP said the man lived in Peterview, a community in the Exploits Valley area, and that he was in his 40s.

The man, who was alone in the vehicle at the time, was taken to hospital in Clarenville, where he was pronounced dead.

"Evidence at the scene determined that the vehicle had collided with a moose before departing the highway," the RCMP's statement said.

Police and other first responders were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. NT.
