Pinpoint Weather: Hot weekend, few storms possible

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Heat and humidity will dominate the forecast for the weekend in Southwest and Central Virginia. Stay cool, hydrated, and safe in these hot temperatures.

There will be little relief from the heat overnight Saturday as temperatures will only fall into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

The heat continues into Sunday. Temperatures in the Roanoke Valley, Central Virginia, and Southside will rise into the mid-90s by the afternoon. Highs in the Alleghany Highlands and New River Valley will mainly be in the lower and middle 80s. The heat and rising humidity levels will allow some late-day showers and storms to develop ahead of a weak cold front. Although the rain activity will be hit or miss, storms may be capable of producing downpours and gusty winds.

A few showers and storms may linger into Monday morning. Otherwise, drier weather will return to the region. There will be a slight “cool down” behind the passing cold front. Afternoon highs will be in the 80s and lower 90s.

The hot weather makes a comeback for the middle of the week. On Tuesday, highs will range from mid-80s to mid-90s under mostly sunny skies. Wednesday will be even hotter with afternoon temperatures in the 90s to nearly 100 degrees.

When dealing with hot weather, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • If you plan on working or exercising outside, try to do so during the morning or evening when temperatures aren’t as hot

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Stay in the shade when you can

  • Consider wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

  • Never leave anybody or any pets in a hot car unattended

There is a chance for showers and storms on Wednesday and Thursday. A cold front will pass through on Thursday, bringing some relief from the heat. Highs on Thursday will be in the 80s and lower 90s.
