Pittsburg FD hosts national fundraiser for the first time to benefit pediatric cancer research

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg Fire Department helped community members take a break from the heat, Friday.

It took part in the national fundraiser Alex’s Lemonade Stand which raises money for pediatric cancer research and treatment. And it wasn’t just a lemonade stand. Folks could also purchase baked goods and raffle tickets.

They also had the chance to dunk a firefighter check out some of the department’s equipment and take part in a number of other activities. There were even Disney princesses, Belle, Rapunzel, Snow White and Aurora.

All of this to benefit a much greater cause.

“Childhood pediatric cancer, it affects multiple families everywhere. Not only in the bigger cities but it could be your neighbor, so I think its super important to learn about it and learn how you can support it,” said Rayne Defebaugh, SEK Princesses “Rapunzel.”

“We like to help out with the kids anytime we can. From them coming with the school tours and all the way through, and to be able to help out in an event like this, its a lot of fun for us to get out and meet everybody in the public and just to be here,” said Mike Shoemaker, Pittsburg Fire Department Battalion Chief.

Shoemaker said this is the first year the fire department has hosted the event.
