Plane nearly snaps in half during Hernando County crash

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A plane carrying two people crashed in Hernando County Friday afternoon, according to first responders.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said the plane crashed off of Pine Island Drive, right on the embankment.

According to a social media post by Hernando County Fire Rescue, the aircraft lost power and tried to lane on the road when it struck a palm tree.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the plane had an engine problem.

Photos of the crash showed the plane nearly severed in half.

Officials said the two occupants got out of the vehicle with minor injuries. The crash caused a 30-gallon fuel spill that is currently being cleaned up by hazmat crews.

The NTSB is investigating.
