To mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, world leaders, royals, and veterans gathered for an international ceremony at Omaha Beach in Normandy. Notably, Prince William represented King Charles at the ceremony. (Earlier in the day, King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the UK government's commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer.) While many royal family engagements were postponed due to the UK general election, royal attendance at the events marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day still went ahead.
Other royals in attendance at the the international commemorative ceremony in Saint Laurent sur Mer included King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Frederik X of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Many heads of state were also at the ceremony, including President Joe Biden, France's President Macron, and Ukraine's President Zelensky. Plus, around 200 veterans—mostly from the U.S., Britain, Canada, and France–were also present for the ceremony; the majority of these men are over 100 years old.
