Princess Anne HS student selected for elite Navy Summer Flight Academy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — One Virginia Beach school student’s future is taking off.

Kenul Vantwest, a student at Princess Anne High School has been selected for the U.S. Navy’s Summer Flight Academy aviation program at Delaware State University.

He is just one of 28 high-performing 11th and 12th graders from across the country chosen to participate in the program.

The Navy and select universities throughout the country partner to provide flight training to the participating students. The estimated cost of the program is $28,000. However, the Department of the Navy sponsors the program and students in the Navy and Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. participate at no charge.

Vanwest will earn his FAA Private Pilot’s license once he completes the intensive eight-week program.

“The goal of the scholarship program is to inspire and expose exceptional young talent from communities across the nation to a career path in Naval Aviation,” says Tamara Graham, Deputy Director, CNAF Flight Academy Program Manager. “Kenul Vantwest has demonstrated incredible potential, and the Navy is honored to play a part in his personal and professional journey.”

During the program, Vanwest will receive a minimum of 32 hours of classroom aviation academics and more than 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or Piper Warrior (PA-28). He will also be required to complete 17 hours of solo flights as part of the certification process.
