Probation granted Carl Junction man in assault of wife

Jun. 20—A Jasper County judge Thursday granted a Carl Junction man a suspended sentence on a felony domestic assault conviction and placed him on probation for five years.

Jason D. Curtin, 30, had pleaded guilty April 15 to a count of second-degree domestic assault in a plea agreement dismissing related counts of first-degree domestic assault and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Judge Dean Dankelson accepted the plea deal and assessed Curtin an underlying sentence of seven years but suspended execution of the sentence and placed him on supervised probation for five years. The judge also ordered that the defendant have no contact with the victim, his wife, other than what is necessary in their sharing of custody of a child they have in common.

The conviction pertains to a domestic disturbance in 2021 when officers answering a 911 call hang-up were met by Curtin at the door of the couple's residence and observed visible injuries to the woman's face. She told police he had come home intoxicated and began beating and choking her when she confronted him about it.

She managed to break free of him at one point and tried to flee the residence, but he caught up with her and dragged her into a bedroom closet where he resumed beating her, according to a probable-cause affidavit.
