Prolific offender sentenced to 34 years for 140 counts

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — An offender that the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office (AD’s Office) said was responsible for 15% of all burglaries in the district has been sentenced after pleading guilty to over 140 counts.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) starting in May 2022, a series of home and business burglaries were reported in unincorporated El Paso County and in the City of Colorado Springs.

An investigation of the burglaries was started by EPSO and at the same time, another investigation was started by the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD). Over several months leads were generated from Ring doorbell and surveillance footage, along with other various online resources. According to EPSO, the investigations led to the identification of a suspect, 50-year-old Brandon Kerby.

In September 2022, Kerby was arrested on many charges and after search warrants were served both EPSO and CSPD recovered stolen items and were reunited with their rightful owners.

Kerby posted bail in December 2022 for his original case and EPSO said resumed his criminal behavior. Between December 2022 and March 2023 Kerby allegedly burglarized businesses and stole items including from one vehicle. Kerby was arrested again, culminating in over 140 criminal counts with dozens of victims, and allegedly responsible for more than $400,000 in thefts including several thousand dollars in property damage, according to EPSO.

“As I have promised before, criminals will be held accountable, and we will do our best for the victims of crime and the citizens of this great county,” said Sheriff Joseph Roybal.  “The partnerships and collaboration we have within the community and throughout law enforcement in the Pikes Peak Region are invaluable.”

According to the DA’s Office, Kerby was found guilty or pled guilty to over 140 different charges and on March 5, 2024, was sentenced to 34 years in the Department of Corrections. The DA’s Office said at the time of his sentencing that Kerby was responsible for 15% of all burglaries reported in the largest, most populous, and busiest judicial district in Colorado.
