Proud Boys member from Concord faces new charges in January 6 U.S. Capitol attack

CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Concord man is facing new charges related to actions at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In a filing made May 30, 2024, Jay Thaxton faces charges of Obstruction of Law Enforcement During Civil Order, Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds, Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds, Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building or Grounds, and Obstructing or Impeding Passage In A Capitol Building or Grounds.

Thaxton had previously been arrested by police in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, for violating a curfew that was put in place in the city after the events at the U.S. Capitol.

In the most recent filings, Thaxton reportedly confirmed his presence in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, “but denied ever going to the U.S. Capitol Grounds…(and) further claimed that he had traveled to Washington D.C. by himself.”

The filing said those statements from Thaxton were untrue.

The filing also includes images of Thaxton in clothing the night of his arrest, and images alleged to be of Thaxton in similar clothing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, present at a Proud Boys gathering near the Washington Monument on the morning of January 6, 2021.

Thaxton had previously been deposed as part of the 2022 Congressional investigation into the events of January 6, and “confirmed both his past and continued membership in the Proud Boys, including serving at one point as vice president of his North Carolina chapter,” according to the filing.

The images also reportedly show Thaxton “made his way to the front ranks of rioters as their progress was temporarily blocked by a line of USCP (United States Capitol Police) officers in the plaza”, along with Thaxton’s hands and feet on sections of broken fencing, and the filing further alleged that Thaxton took an active part in the destruction of the fencing near the U.S. Capitol.  The images also allegedly show Thaxton actively pushing the fencing towards Capitol Police.

Prior to the events at the U.S. Capitol, Thaxton had been a known figure locally for conservative causes, and spoke with Queen City News in 2019 about his support for a group of Stanly County cheerleaders who were facing suspension from the NC High School Athletic Association over a “Trump 2020” banner at a game, which the association said was a violation of policy.
