‘Rare occurrence’: Two baby falcons rescued in San Jose, San Mateo

(KRON) — In the span of a single week, the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) and SPCA rescued two young peregrine falcons on two separate occasions after falling from their respective nests in San Jose and San Mateo. Wildlife staff are calling this “a rare occurrence.”

On Friday, PHS and SPCA tended to a rescued young peregrine falcon who accidentally fell from its nest in San Jose.

Falcon followers who track the family reported it was “baby Lucia, a baby member of the much loved ‘San Jose City Hall Falcon’ family,” who accidentally went off a City Hall ledge, SPCA said.

She was rescued from the City Hall building and taken to PHS/SPCA, where wildlife staff found no injuries. Later, they worked with the UC Santa Cruz biologists to reunite the pre-fledgling with its family.

In a separate incident earlier this week, a baby falcon had fallen out of its nest in San Mateo and was eventually taken for a medical examination by a passerby who happened to also be a biologist, SPCA said.

“The bird was found to be dehydrated, and fluids were administered. Once stabilized, the bird was released to UC Santa Cruz biologists who reunited the baby falcon with its family,” SPCA said.

SPCA said Caltrans helped return the bird to its nest, which is approximately 100 feet above the ground on Caltrans’s property.

“It looks like these babies caught a case of spring fever and tried to flee the nest a little early! We are thrilled to see them healthy and reunited with their families,” Colleen Crowley, PHS/SPCA Communications Manager, said.
