Record tornados in West Virginia for 2024 year

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – The 2024 US tornado season is on track to be a record breaking season and West Virginia is contributing to this trend.

Wednesday keeps chance for showers around; drier weather returns Thursday

So far, the National Weather Service has confirmed 15 tornados have occurred in West Virginia throughout this year.

One of the most recent tornados was in Fayette County and was rated as an EF2.

59News spoke to National Weather Service Meteorologist, Simone Lewis to find out how you can be prepared the next time a tornado strikes.

“When you do know that there’s the potential for tornados or other severe weather, have a plan in place. For example, if you’re somebody who lives in a trailer or a manufactured home, it’s best to either leave the trailer that day and be close or in a sturdy building, preferably one with a basement,” said Lewis.

Simone also told us that if you live in a house without a basement to take shelter in an interior room.
