PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A highly contagious virus that causes respiratory diseases in dogs has halted all operations for several weeks at a Pasco shelter.

In a news release on Wednesday, Pasco County Animal Services said they are suspending all dog adoptions, intakes, surgeries, and rescue transfers for, at minimum, the next four weeks at their Land O’ Lakes shelter.

Due to the presence of Canine Influenza, the organization said the environment is not safe for pets.

PCAS said they are performing ongoing testing, supportive care, and staying in contact with recent adopters and rescuers.

“The health and safety of the animals in our care, as well as people and pets in our community, is and will always be our top priority,” PCAS Director Mike Shumate said in a statement. “We realize this suspension of services is an inconvenience for our customers, and we appreciate your understanding.”

If your pet is showing symptoms of this disease, it is recommended to contact your veterinarian immediately. Common symptoms include sneezing, watery eyes, a runny nose, and coughing.

PCAS said all cat operations are not affected by the virus, along with pet licensing and owner-requested euthanasia.
