Robertsdale couple charged with child abuse: RPD

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — A Robertsdale couple is charged with aggravated child abuse after a two-month investigation.

31-year-olds Kelsey Maranda Brewer and William Wyatt Brewer were in court Friday on the felony charges.

“It’s abuse over the course of time, and we do feel like this has been going on for a while,” says Cpl. Michael Baggett with Robertsdale Police.

Just before the end of the school year, a teacher reported suspected child abuse, according to Baggett. “The victim showed up at school with a busted lip and swelling of her upper lip.”

According to Robertsdale Police, it was one of almost half a dozen reports to the Alabama Department of Human Resources about the same child, reports of abuse the Brewers say didn’t happen.

“They admit to hitting her in the mouth with the lunch box, causing the busted lip, but they say it was an accident; all of the other allegations they denied.”

Those other allegations include not giving her food and locking her in a bedroom with an alarm and a rope tying it shut. A bathroom that did not work, no sink or running hot water and the only furnishings in that bedroom were a bed frame and mattress.

“We looked at her room and compared it to the two younger siblings they had everything in their room that you would think a young child should have bed, clothes toys,” said Baggett.

All of the children are now out of the home. Baggett says their job is just beginning. “Just witnessing it firsthand, it’s very disturbing.”
