During his time serving in Grand Haven, Cummins spent four years on the Planning Commission and two years on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was elected to council on Nov. 5, 2019.

Cummins said the delay until August will give prospective candidates an opportunity to learn about the role and ask questions before submitting an application.

Although Cummins grew up in Muskegon and moved to Grand Haven in 2014, he's worked in Saugatuck since 2022, when he was hired as director of planning, zoning and project management.

He was named interim city manager in February after his predecessor, Ryan Heise, agreed to resign.

Cummins was selected for the permanent role by Saugatuck City Council in a 5-2 vote, after interviews with three finalists. His employment agreement was approved in early June, an annual salary of $115,000, plus health, dental and life insurance, and $3,000 for an annual automobile allowance.
