Scholarship fund begun after 14-year-old East Sandwich boy dies in motocross crash

Community members are mourning the death of a 14-year-old East Sandwich boy after a dirt bike crash June 15 at a Wareham motocross track. The boy's death marked the second fatal crash at the track in three years.

The injured boy, Colby Andrew Lippincott, 14, was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, where he was pronounced dead.

Diamond MX motocross track, where the crash occurred, posted about a GoFundMe campaign in memory of the boy on its Facebook page.

Lippincott was known for his academic excellence and passion for adventure sports, including dirt biking. He was actively involved in his community and church.

“Colby was a diligent Honors student at Sandwich Middle High School where he excelled in Engineering, Math & Science,” his obituary reads. “His teacher's voted him as ‘Most Likely to Break a World Record.’”

A scholarship fund has been created to honor the boy's memory, according to the obituary.

Emergency responders went to Diamond MX on Atwood Farm Way in East Wareham following a 911 call about a dirt bike crash shortly after 12:35 p.m., according to Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz.

Course operator says 'all safety measures were in place'

“With sadness in our hearts, we must address a tragedy that happened today at the track,” Diamond MX said in a statement on its Facebook page. “The Diamond MX family extends our deepest condolences to the rider's family and all involved.”

In its statement, the company said all safety measures were in place at the time.

“Diamond MX is committed to providing a safe riding experience,” the statement said. “We can confidently say all safety measures were taken and in place today. The motocross community partakes in riding for the fun, freedom, and escape it provides for us. With that being said, we also know the risk that is involved.”

Diamond MX was closed the day after the crash, the track's management said, “out of respect for the family and track employees.”

State Police detectives are investigating. Additionally, Wareham police reported that an officer responding to the scene was involved in a motor vehicle accident and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A 13-year-old Carver girl, Ava Pioppi, died in a crash at the track in September 2021. The track was called Wareham MX and under different ownership before it was sold and renamed.

GoFundMe campaign launched

The GoFundMe campaign launched in memory of Colby Lippincott, organized by Nicholas Kostaras, aims to support his family. As of Friday morning, approximately $10,000 has been raised.
