Search underway for driver involved in deadly hit-and-run in Lincoln County

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The NC State Highway Patrol is searching for a vehicle they say was involved in a deadly hit-and-run Thursday night in Lincoln County.

The incident happened at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, June 20, on Business 321 near Summerow Road.

Troopers said a Ford Taurus was traveling north on Business 321, crossed the centerline, and collided with a southbound 2003 Mitsubishi Montero. After the collision, the driver of the Montero lost control, drove off the road, and overturned.

The driver of the Montero, Jacob Michael Bentley, 23, of Lincolnton, was seriously injured and flown to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he passed away.

Troopers said he was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a silver or tan four-door Ford Taurus that’s missing the left front headlight assembly and displaying a temporary registration plate.

NC State Highway Patrol provided example photos of the vehicle they’re looking for.
