Second Virginia Beach sea turtle nest of the season found

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Did you sea it? The second Virginia Beach sea turtle nest of the season was found Thursday morning.

The nest was found at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge after a loggerhead sea turtle crawled up the beach overnight and laid 133 eggs.

This nest was laid below the average high tide line and was relocated to the toe of the sand dunes.

“Relocating nests laid below the high tide line is one way to protect eggs. If sea turtle eggs are laid in an area that is frequently inundated then the nest faces a significant risk of infertility.”

After nests are carefully relocated to the toe of the sand dunes a cage is placed over the eggs to protect them from predators. Signs are also posted to alert people to the presence of the turtle nest.
