WESTLAKE, Ohio (WJW) — Mama duck paced back and forth quacking nearby after her eight ducklings fell into a storm drain grate in Westlake.

Here are the differences between a Heat Advisory and Excessive Heat Warning

Neighbor Beth Cherico heard the baby ducks chirping in distress, saw they were trapped down below looking up at her, and she called Westlake firefighters who didn’t hesitate to help.

Two firefighters removed the steel grate with a long metal hook, then used a fishing net to bring each duckling up safely to be reunited with mama duck.

A neighbor named Judy, who gave the firefighters her fishing net and is seen in the video (above), called the ducklings “adorable” and thanked the firefighters.

“There’s a pond behind that house and that’s where she takes them,” Judy said, as the ducklings followed their mama duck down the road.

Cherico, who recently took the video told FOX8 News on Monday, “They (firefighters) respond to the call no matter what it is…they saved the lives of all of those baby ducks and I’m proud to live in Westlake,” she said.

Westlake Fire Chief Matt Moran told FOX 8, “We get calls for all types of rescues, and our firefighters did a great job. It goes a long way with residents who are animal lovers. We are full service.”
