One person dead following crash involving tractor-trailer on I-95 in Branford

A New Haven man was killed after his car struck a tractor-trailer that was parked off of Interstate 95 in Branford early Tuesday.

Josiah Lawrence Steinman, 24, died at Yale New Haven Hospital following a crash reported just before 3:15 a.m. on I-95 North, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said a tractor-trailer driver was parked just past a rest area in the shoulder of the highway when the crash occurred. Steinman was driving a 2019 Nissan Sentra heading north in the right lane when he veered into the shoulder “for an unknown reason” and struck the rear of the tractor-trailer, according to state police.

Steinman was taken in an ambulance to Yale New Haven for serious injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The driver of the tractor-trailer did not report any injuries

The state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (C.A.R.S.) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Both vehicles involved had to be towed. Traffic was diverted off Exit 53 while crews were on scene.

Witnesses to the crash have been asked to contact Troop G at 203-696-2500.
