Shoutout to Missandei, who just turned this “Game of Thrones” fan theory on its head
For what feels like 84 years — okay fine, six seasons — we’ve been trying to figure out the identity of Azor Ahai aka “The Prince That Was Promised,” but we now we might be closer than ever to learning it. Spoilers for Game of Thrones episode “Stormborn” ahead.
Game of Thrones has had many long-running questions throughout its run, but none have lingered quite as heavily as the identity of The Prince That Was Promised, the prophesied savior who will save Westeros from an expanding darkness.
Last night we learned, courtesy of brilliant linguist Missandei, that our translation for The Prince That Was Promised was a little *too* literal.
After being shunned by Jon Snow — for, you know, murdering Shireen Baratheon in the name of The Lord of Light —Melisandre reemerged to find a new savior in Daenerys Targaryen. The Red Woman met with Dany and her council, she recounted the The Prince That Was Promised prophecy, which is, in case you forgot:
“When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.”
But, just as Dany was beginning to question how she could possibly be The Prince That Was Promised, Queen of Translation Missandei stepped in to explain that High Valyrian doesn’t have gendered nouns. The prophecy could be referring to The Prince or Princess That Was Promised.

Now, Dany’s been a top candidate for Azor Ahai for many seasons, and we love that the GoT is making it clear that she’s a serious contender. Ranking Lord of Light follower and head Azor Ahai theorizer Melisandre seems to think Dany might be the one, but she still isn’t quite ready to move on from her most recent pick, Jon Snow.
Could they *both* be Azor Ahai? Is it someone else altogether? Right now, we’re just as unsure as Melisandre. Needless to say, it’s *not* Stannis. Hopefully, things will clear up a little bit after Jon and Dany FINALLY meet next week!
