A man has been jailed after seriously injuring two sisters when he ran them over.

Nicholas Adams reversed into the women in the car park of the Dovecote pub, West Bromwich, in October 2023.

He was charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and was sentenced to three years and 11 months at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday.

The women, aged 76 and 82, have thanked the police officer who rushed to help at the scene.

PC Glenn Brabham got beneath the car to get to the victims, who were trapped. He rescued one, while the other was rescued by the fire service.

"We would like to thank all the emergency services who came to our rescue on that day," they said in a joint statement.

"Especially PC Glenn Brabham, who play played an important part in getting us from under the car."

"He definitely deserves a medal in my opinion," said one of the women.

"I am so grateful to Glenn for what he did for me and my sister."

Both women spent weeks in hospital, after suffering multiple serious fractures.

Three days before the incident, Adams was convicted of driving a vehicle while above the alcohol limit, and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was in the passenger seat of a Vauxhall Insignia, alongside two others, when they entered the car park at about 12:30 GMT on 15 October.

After a minor collision, Adams got in the driver’s seat to move the car, but did not close the door, and his leg remained outside the car.

CCTV footage shows the vehicle moving slowly, before reversing at speed, hitting the victims and mounting a flower bed.

"I knew I had to get under the car as quickly but safely as possible," said PC Brabham.

"All I could think about was my wife's nans - who were of a similar age - and what they would want to hear," he added.

In recognition of his bravery, Pc Brabham was named overall winner of the West Midlands Police Federation Bravery Awards, earlier this year.
