Six file to run for three Vigo School Board seats

Six people are running for three Vigo County School Board seats, including a former teacher union official and a former school board member.

The filing period ended at noon Thursday. Two seats are up for election in District 1 (Harrison Township), as well as the District 3 seat (Otter Creek/Nevins townships).

School board members are elected by all county voters, but they must be a resident of the district from which they run.

Mark Lee, former long-time Vigo County Teachers Association president, is running in District 3; he will face incumbent Stacy Killion, who is seeking re-election.

Rosemarie Scott, who previously served one term on the board from District 5, has moved to Harrison Township and is seeking election in District 1.

Others running from District 1 are incumbent Amy Lore as well as Christina Crist and Peggy Joyner. Jackie Lower is not seeking re-election.

Lee was a VCSC teacher for 33 years and served as VCTA president for 23 years. He said he developed and wrote contract language; served on the VCSC benefits committee; worked with budgets and dealt with personnel issues.

“I have a very good understanding of the everyday operations of the VCSC,” he said in a statement. “I will bring common sense, experience, expertise and knowledge to the school board.”

In running for school board, Scott said her reason for running is the same as when she previously ran. “I want to be a connection between the corporation and the community,” she said. “I feel that is my strength.”

She’s also continued to attend school board meetings.

The general election is Nov. 5.
