Smog levels spike in Southern California; advisory issued

Hot weather combined with wildfire smoke and stagnant air is pushing smog to unhealthy levels across Southern California.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued an ozone advisory that extends from 11 a.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Tuesday

The agency’s map showed smog readings in the red, or “unhealthy” range, in areas of Riverside and San Bernardino counties Friday afternoon. Other parts of the Southland saw levels in the “moderate” range and “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” (See health recommendations for each level)

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, especially in the afternoon when smog levels typically spike.

South Coast AQMD also recommends residents limit their use of gasoline-powered lawnmowers and gardening equipment until the evening hours, set thermostats at a higher temperature, try to delay trips to the gas station and limit the use of household chemicals until the evening.

The inland valleys and deserts of Southern California can expect daytime high temperatures in the 90s and low triple digits this weekend.
