Spirit AeroSystems workers learn if their jobs are cut

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Machinists union says workers learned Thursday whether they still have a job at Spirit AeroSystems. Last month, KSN News reported that an internal Spirit memo mentioned cutting the hourly production workforce by up to 450 people. The union says the number ended up being closer to 300.

According to the Machinists union, 282 workers were given layoff notices, while 28 chose voluntary layoff. The total is 310.

Those affected will be paid through July 4. They will get their last paycheck on July 11. Benefits will continue through the end of July.

Boeing released a statement about the layoffs.

“To adapt to evolving customer demands and balance our financial situation, Spirit made the difficult decision to reduce its hourly production workforce in Wichita, Kansas, by approximately 300,” Joe Buccino, Spirit spokesman, said. “These changes were driven by the need to slow down our operations of Commercial programs due to high inventory levels.”

Lisa Whitley, president of Machinists District Lodge #70, said the union is available to support the laid-off workers.

“We are available to answer any questions and provide assistance throughout this process,” she said. “We also urge utility companies and other creditors to cooperate with our machinists, recognizing that they are not merely numbers but our neighbors and integral members of our community.”

Whitley also called on Spirit AeroSystems to honor the contract by refraining from hiring contractors to fill any positions until all laid-off workers have been reinstated.
