St. Charles implements new program against speeding

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The City of St. Charles is launching a new program to crack down on drivers speeding through the area, including subdivisions.

It’s the Zero Tolerance of Speeding Program that involves the entire police department to combat speeding one day at a time.

“We’re getting people driving 35, 45, even as high as 60 miles an hour in subdivisions. That can’t happen,” Mayor Dan Borgmeyer said. “We have 363 miles of roads in St. Charles; we can’t cover them all so the chief and I have developed a program called Zero Tolerance. So, on random days, nobody’s going to know when the entire police forces will have traffic responsibilities.”

Police Chief Ray Juengst says that a day focused on the program can involve between 35 and 40 officers.

“We’re going to kick it off tomorrow, June 1; however, that may not be the day that we do it…it’s not anything we’re going to make anyone aware of. We want them to be conscious daily, so we’re letting them know this is coming.”

Officials say it could occur once a month, or it could occur every day of the month. The program will run through August.
