Startling discovery: Brooklyn man awoke to find snake in bathtub

MIDWOOD, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A Brooklyn man will now add a new step to his morning routine after a startling discovery in his bathtub Wednesday morning: checking for snakes.

Steve Nahama, a Midwood resident, shared a picture of the at least 2-foot-long corn snake that somehow got into his bathtub overnight.

“I proceeded to look on the tub itself and I saw what looked like I thought was a worm of some sort,” said Nahama, describing the moment he discovered the snake.

Half-awake and hardly believing what was happening, he told PIX11 News how he tried to grab it with nearby scissors and flush it down the toilet. The snake jumped away and lightly bit his hand, just barely breaking the skin.

The terrified man didn’t realize it at the time but corn snakes are not venomous — in fact, they are generally seen as beneficial to humans because they hunt small rodents that damage crops and spread disease.

Police and animal control responded and identified the snake. As to how the snake got into Nahama’s bathtub, everyone is a bit puzzled. The bathroom drain cover has holes that are too small.

Nahama theorizes the snake may have been someone’s pet that got into the sewer system and found its way up his toilet.

Corn snakes are legal in New York City.
