A suspect has been arrested in Wednesday's knife attack by a stranger on the quayside boardwalk in New Westminster, B.C.

Sgt. Andrew Leaver with the New Westminster police said the male victim was attacked from behind by a man with a large knife while walking on the boardwalk on the evening of June 19.

He said the victim suffered minor injuries.

A charge of assault with a weapon is being recommended to Crown counsel.

Leaver said the arrest was made possible by the public's response to an appeal for witnesses and video footage.

"In this instance, it led directly to an arrest and our city is a safer place because of their help," he said.

Police described the suspect as an Asian man in his 20s with short black hair, a light complexion and slim build, wearing black sweat pants and no shirt.
