Swimming limited at Presque Isle due to E. coli levels. What to know

Swimming is not permitted Friday at Presque Isle State Park's Beach 6 due to elevated E. coli counts.

It is the park's first swimming restriction of the season, and comes after a record-breaking 2023 when park officials issued 87 swimming restriction days and 31 swimming advisory days.

Testing early Friday showed an E. coli count of 1,020 particles per 100 milliliters of lake water, above the Erie County Department of Health's threshold of 999. Beach 6 will remain open to the public for sunbathing and other activities.

Swimming is permitted Friday at the park's other guarded beaches.

Retesting has begun on lake water collected at Beach 6 and will be performed daily. Swimming will be permitted once E. coli levels have dropped below the threshold.
