TBI investigating officer involved shooting in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place at a residence Friday night in downtown Johnson City.

Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) officers responded to a domestic assault call in the 100 block of W. Chestnut Street off South Roan Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Friday, the TBI said in a news release.

The release said that upon the officers’ arrival, a man came out of the house carrying a shotgun. Preliminary reports from the scene indicate an altercation between the man and officer ensued after the subject fired the gun.

According to the TBI, officers fired back, striking the male. He was then transported to an area hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the altercation.

This is an ongoing investigation, according to the TBI. A statement provided by the TBI can be found below:

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
