Teen accused of murder in death near Barryton

FORK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 16-year-old boy is being held on a murder charge the death of a man near Barryton earlier this week.

On Friday, the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office said that a teenager was in custody on the charge of a felony warrant for homicide for the death of 41-year-old Richard Simko.

The teen was a “ward of Osceola County Probate Court at the time of the murder,” the sheriff’s office said. He spent the last year out-of-state in a custody program for crimes that he committed in Osceola County in 2022 and 2023.

Deputies investigate ‘suspicious’ death in Mecosta County

Simko was found dead on Truman Road near 50th Avenue in Fork Township Wednesday morning.

The sheriff’s office said that further investigation revealed that he was shot and bludgeoned to death in his home.

The case remains under investigation.
