Teen charged after accidentally shooting himself at school in Bedford County

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office says a teen has been charged after accidentally shooting himself at Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy (SMLCA) on Jan. 12.

In January, deputies were called to the Food Lion on Moneta Road for a man with a gunshot wound. Once on the scene, authorities found 18-year-old William Parker Lee with an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Throughout the investigation, deputies learned that the incident occurred in the parking lot at SMLCA, in Moneta. Based on evidence and statements from eyewitnesses, on March 27, deputies obtained charges for Lee.

He was arrested and charged with reckless handling of a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property

Lee was held on a secured bond at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office believe this was an isolated incident and there was no concern for the public’s safety.
