A British teenager has been reported missing in Tenerife as it emerged he made a phone call to a friend to say that he was lost and needed water.

Jay Slater, 19, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been in the Canary Islands for a weekend rave when he attempted a trek through a national park.

Lucy Mae, one of the friends with whom he went on the holiday, said she had a call from him on Monday morning, saying he was lost and needed a drink and his phone had one per cent battery.

According to Ms Mae, Mr Slater said he was trying to walk back to the apartment, having been unable to catch a bus.

Mr Slater’s mother Debbie, who has arrived in Tenerife to help with the rescue effort, told Mail Online the distance from where he is believed to have gone missing to the apartment was a 10-hour walk.

“I’m beside myself with worry,” she said. “He’d been at a three-day festival, so he would have consumed a fair bit of alcohol, but Jay was Snapchatting with friends before he went missing and seemed very compos mentis.”
