Then & Now: Do you know where this is?
This Italianate-style house was built in the 1850s as a getaway for Ransom C. Taylor, a Worcester real estate wheeler and dealer.
He parlayed his father's meat-processing business into property holdings. He was said to be one of the biggest owners of Worcester real estate.
He also had a stately home on Main Street — not the home pictured in this week's Then photo.
This house, shown in a 1977 photo, was commissioned by Taylor as a country home, on land that at the time was considered to be far from the hustle and bustle of the city. It was on a wooded hillside.
In later years, the property was reworked into a business. By that time, the area had grown considerably, the neighborhood no longer considered to be on the outskirts.
In recent years, a subsequent owner talked about demolishing the building to make way for development. After some pushback by preservationists and a change in ownership, it appears the wrecking ball has been shooed away.
