Therapy dog at Highlands County Sheriff’s office dies after battle with cancer

TAMPA (Fla.) — The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office’s therapy dog Trey has died Thursday after a hard-fought battle of lymphoma but kept his spirits up with kisses and affection until the very end.

Trey, the lovable Corgi, was the pup that started the HCSO’s Therapy Dog Program. Volunteer Champlain Allen Altvater brought Trey to their office after the loss of Deputy William Gentry who was killed in the line of duty in 2018.

Trey helped hundreds of people as a therapy dog including elementary students who struggled with reading through the Reading Buddies program and children going through the difficult process that follow being the victim of a crime. Trey comforted families of the victims of the SunTrust shooting and left a major impact on the community and the HCSO’s office that will last forever.

“Please join us in keeping the Alvater family in your prayers” Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said.
