Thousands lose power in Chemung County during heat advisory

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — About 3,700 NYSEG customers across Chemung County lost power on Saturday afternoon.

According to the NYSEG outage list, a total of 3,727 customers in the towns of Ashland, Baldwin, Chemung, Elmira, Erin, Horseheads, and Southport and the City of Elmira were without power as of 2 p.m. on June 22. Most of those without power are in Elmira and Southport; a total of 2,109 customers in Elmira lost power, and 1,206 customers in Southport lost power.

How to stay safe during severe heat

NYSEG assigned a crew to investigate the cause of the outage, and according to the outage map, power is expected to be back in the area at about 4 p.m.

People without power can visit the Steele Memorial Library or the Horseheads Free Library to stay cool while waiting for power to return. Both of the libraries are open until 5 p.m. and are the only Chemung County cooling stations open on Saturdays.
