Thursday night boating accident leaves 1 dead, 1 injured on Matanzas River

A Thursday night boating accident on the Matanzas River has left one person dead and another injured.

One of two passengers thrown from the boat was rescued late Thursday and hospitalized with minor injuries, St. Johns County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Chris Naff told Times-Union news partner First Coast News. Hours later, the second boater was discovered, pulled from the water and pronounced dead around 2 a.m., Chad Weber with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

The first call for help was reported at 9:41, officials said. The incident happened on the river near SR 312.

No other details, including the victims' names, were immediately available.

In addition to SJCFR, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, St. Johns County Marine Rescue, St. Augustine Police Department and Florida Fish & Wildlife were on scene, First Coast News reported.
