Tift BOE considers vacation compensation amendment

Jun. 19—TIFTON — The Tift County Board of Education is looking into adjustments to its time-off policies regarding the compensation of terminated employees.

Board members discussed a proposed amendment for the school system's Board Policy GARK, which pertains to employee vacation time, that would see a cap be applied to the amount of time for which 12-month employees could receive compensation following their termination, during the board's meetings last week.

Under the amended policy, terminated employees would receive compensation for their unused time only up to ten days, or the equivalent of a year's worth of accumulated leave.

School superintendent Natalie Gore explained that under the current policy 12-month employees earn ten days of vacation time in a single fiscal year and can carry this time over to other years, accumulating up to twenty days, but they would not receive compensation for unused vacation days.

The amendment would instead ensure employees would receive compensation following their termination, but only for the time they do not use out of the ten days provided from a single year.

Board members voted during their June 13 meeting to open the proposed amendment up for public review and opinions for the next thirty days, opting to come to a decision on the item at their July meeting.
