A look at the other nominees for the Times Herald-Record Student of the Week

Kyra Harris, New Paltz: Kyra, a sophomore, has a grade point average of 90% and she has a 90% in Algebra.

Kyra embodies work ethics, respectful behavior, and a commitment to learning. Her quiet demeanor doesn't diminish her active engagement in the classroom.

She consistently puts in effort and strides for excellence. Kyra's teacher, Angela Pressley, said, "It is a pleasure to have her in my Algebra class."

Samantha Mentnech, Tri-Valley: Samantha, a senior, is a prime example of a student leader. Samantha has received many honorable mentions for her paintings and the gold key for one of her photographs which hangs in the fine arts building at SUNY New Paltz.

One of her most notable accomplishments is her receiving the Scholastic Art award. Samantha has earned mastery in both math and science and has maintained a GPA of over 95 for her high school career. She has participated in our most rigorous academic programs including numerous college and honors courses.

Her art teacher states, "Samantha Mentnech is an innately talented artist, who strives to constantly improve her craft. Throughout my art courses, she completed increasingly striking work, as she challenged herself to take risks with technique and subject matter."

Chyanne Negron, Marlboro: Chyanne, a senior, is a strong student who contributes greatly to her school. Chyanne is involved in important school initiatives including No Place for Hate.

She has helped students participate in improving our school culture.

Jimi Reedy, Tuxedo Union: With above-average grades, Jimi, a senior, plans to major in biology in college, with hopes to attend medical school. He enrolled in a three-month course this past summer to become a Certified EMT, having joined the Tuxedo Volunteer Ambulance Youth Corps in eighth grade.

During a recent football game, Jimi's friend collapsed from a sudden impact. He quickly jumped into EMT mode and performed a pulse, motor, sensory assessment and determined the issue was isolated in the knee, which had suffered a previous injury.

School Counselor Chris Oliva says Jimi is an impressive young man, whose academic and community involvement is remarkable. “It’s always heartening to see young people taking an active role in bettering their community. Jimi should be proud of himself for taking on this challenge and successfully completing the rigorous training required to become a certified EMT. Not only has he gained valuable skills and knowledge, but he has also shown a deep desire to make a positive impact in his school community and beyond.”
