Town of Plattsburgh responds to sinkholes on former Plattsburgh Air Force Base

PLATTSBURGH — Three major sinkholes opened up on the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base property in the Town of Plattsburgh Thursday afternoon, prompting town officials to block off portions of roadways.

Heavy rains that deluged the area mid-afternoon Thursday caused the ground to give way, the roads to buckle and deep sinkholes to form.

The Town Highway Department was working to manage the affected areas, and the county’s Office of Emergency Services was informed.

Both Highway Superintendent Greg Burnell and Town Supervisor Michael Cashman went to the scene to assess the situation and coordinate the response.

As a result, there were partial lane closures on Connecticut, Idaho and New York Roads.

The areas were marked off with emergency cones and signage added to alert town residents and travelers in the area.

“Our team is working diligently to address the sinkholes and ensure the safety of the public. We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation during this time,” Highway Superintendent Burnell said.

“This will require a lengthy recovery. The public should remain aware of the alternative routes, signage and give crews space to work.”

Cashman said the safety of town residents and travelers was a top priority.

“We are taking all necessary actions to alleviate the impact of these sinkholes and restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” Cashman said.

“I commend the quick response of our Highway Department and the coordination with the Office of Emergency Services to mitigate the impact.”
