Tropical depression could develop as system nears North Florida coast, NHC says

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A tropical depression could develop as a system nears North Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm is located about 120 miles east of Jacksonville. Meteorologists said the system has developed a well-defined center of circulation and is producing 35 mph winds, but the associated showers and thunderstorms are not quite organized enough it to be considered a tropical cyclone. However, it could become a short-lived tropical depression before it reaches the coast of northeastern Florida or Georgia on Friday night.

The system has a 60 percent chance of developing.

The NHC is also tracking a system in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The system could become a tropical depression as it moves west-northwestward or northwestward over the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.

It has a 60 percent chance of forming over the next seven days.
