TSA: VB man tried to bring loaded gun on flight at Norfolk International Airport

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia Beach man tried to bring a loaded .45 caliber handgun onto a flight from Norfolk International Airport on Thursday, authorities say.

The Transportation Security Administration says the gun, which had a chambered bullet and seven others in the magazine, was detected when the man’s carry on bag went through the TSA’s X-ray machine.

The gun was confiscated by Norfolk police and the man was cited on a weapon charge. The TSA says the case is also being forwarded to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney for possible criminal prosecution. The man could also face a civil penalty as high as $15,000.

“The busy summer travel period is in full swing, and we don’t need travelers bringing their firearms to our checkpoints,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke, the TSA’s federal security director for ORF. “When individuals bring their firearms to our checkpoints, it represents a risk to everyone in the area and slows down the checkpoint screening process for everyone.”

So far this year, 18 guns have been confiscated at ORF, which puts the airport on pace to break its record for confiscated guns (29) set just last year.

The TSA says guns are only allowed in checked baggage and must be unloaded. For more information on what you can bring on a flight, visit the TSA’s website.
