Two injured in single-vehicle crash

ELKHART — Two people were injured when their vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, left the roadway and struck a utility pole south of the city.

The crash occurred at 3 p.m. Wednesday on C.R. 20 east of C.R. 111, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said.

A 2002 four-door Buick was traveling west at a high rate of speed when the driver, Coleen Groman, 36, of Elkhart, suddenly braked, causing her to lose control and slide through the intersection, the report said.

The vehicle left the north side of the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Groman was transported to Elkhart General Hospital with minor injuries to her legs. A passenger, Joseph Mendoza, 49, was taken to the hospital with a moderate head injury. Both were wearing seat belts, police said.
