Two-vehicle crash involving 18-wheeler on I-85 leads to officer-involved shooting after subject wields knife

UPDATE 5:26 p.m.: The Opelika Police Department has shared additional information about what unfolded after what was initially reported as a two-vehicle crash on I-85.

Based on a press release sent by the police department, Opelika Officers who responded to the crash were confronted by a person wielding a knife, which led to an officer-involved shooting.

Opelika Police says the person was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident. As of now, police said ALEA and the State Bureau of Investigations have been called to investigate. Once evidence and videos are collected Opelika Police says the results will be given to the Lee County DA’s Office.

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – The Opelika Police are on the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car on Interstate 85.

Police say they received a report about the crash around 2:35 p.m. on Tuesday and officers are still on the scene investigating. Both southbound lanes on I-85 are shut down at Exit 58. The inside southbound lane at Exit 58 is also closed to traffic.

At this time, police have not reported any injuries from the crash. Opelika Police also advises for motorists to take an alternate route or prepare for delays when traveling through the area.
