HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — After five seasons at UAH, Men’s Basketball Head Coach John Shulman is officially leaving to make a return to Division I basketball.

The university announced this morning Shulman has resigned to accept the same position at Central Arkansas.

“My job as a coach is to help young people fulfill their dreams and live their dreams. I am so fortunate, those kids played their guts out for me for all these years and just to be honest, they helped me have an opportunity to live my dream again. And so that’s why I’m so appreciative. If UAH does not come along, I am not in the position that I’m in right now. I lost my way at Chattanooga, you get into coaching for the kids and then it becomes about your contract and about going to NCAA Tournament and about if I can move up here and move up there, I lost my way. I did not lose my way here, it was always about the kids. It’s been a great journey,” Shulman said.

Shulman has guided the Chargers to a  112-39 record and five NCAA Tournaments. In the handful of seasons he was at the helm, Shulman led the team to a winning percentage of .676 or higher and 20-plus victories in four of those five seasons.

“I feel very fortunate to have had Coach Shulman as our men’s basketball head coach these past five years,” UAH Director of Athletics Dr. Cade Smith said. “The success he has had both on the court and in our community speaks volumes to his character. We are forever grateful for the impact he has made at UAH and we wish him nothing but the best at UCA.”

Shulman previously coached at UT Chattanooga from 2004-2013.

“My window’s closing a little bit, I’m not as young and spry as I used to be and I knew if I wanted this opportunity ever again, I’m probably going to have to take it. They’ve had one winning season in the last 18 years, I’ve always wanted to take over a program that is not there at that moment, and see if I can do something special. And I like challenges, it gives me energy. We’re at the bottom of the league, good, good, now what,” Shulman added.

The Chargers season came to an end with a 104-78 loss to Embry-Riddle in the Division II NCAA Tournament Saturday night.

UAH says a nationwide search for the next leader of the men’s basketball program will begin immediately.
