UC San Diego diplomas on hold following pro-Palestinian protests

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The recent pro-Palestinian protests at the University of California, San Diego have resulted in dozens of arrests and significant repercussions for students.

Seven UCSD students are now facing transcript freezes, threatening their graduation status.

“No student should be punished, again, for exercising their First Amendment right, and them coming down with these kinds of policies out of nowhere with no due process,” a masked female protester told FOX 5/KUSI.

Students, covering their faces and refusing to identify themselves, demanded amnesty Thursday for those arrested during the protests. One student, a graduating senior, expressed uncertainty about his diploma due to the freeze on his account.

“Chancellor Kosla claims to uphold restorative justice and anti-racism, yet he can’t hold himself accountable for actions on May 6th,” said another masked male student.

University officials stated that the UC Regents have directed all UC schools to place holds on the records of students arrested in recent protests. Each student must undergo a code of conduct process.

UCSD Professor BT Werner also advocated for amnesty for the protesting students, while making calls for a change in university leadership.

“For inciting racist violence against you we will demand the firing of Chancellor Kosla and any other administrators involved,” said Professor BT Werner.

Graduation for UCSD is scheduled for June 15 and 16.
