New urban farm being installed in downtown Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – ICT Farms held a groundbreaking for a new urban farm at The Salvation Army on Friday at 9 a.m.

Thomas Montiel joined KSN News to talk about the event. Montiel said the goal is to provide a sustainable source of fresh fruits and vegetables for local residents, promote healthy eating habits, and offer educational opportunities about gardening and nutrition.

“The Salvation Army has multiple food banks and ways to distribute food, and instead of just utilizing canned space, we figured it would be an amazing opportunity to grow fresh for those who are food insecure,” Montiel said.

The organization will teach people in their programs about gardening and nutrition. They hope to produce 10,000 pounds of food a year to feed people in the area.

“You and I both know that the outside of a grocery store, the outside ring, is the most expensive. The fresh fruits and vegetables, the meats and the dairy and things like that. And so we can at least take care of that produce aspect,” said Jami Scott, the Director of Social Services at The Salvation Army of South Central Area Command.

Urban Farms has multiple locations where they grow food throughout the city. They have a location in Goddard and in north Wichita. It is volunteer-based and completely community-funded.
