Urbana firefighter encourages CPR training after chance rescue

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — An elderly woman is okay after firefighters responded to a scary situation at an Urbana grocery store last week. Now, one of the firefighters wants others to be prepared, too.

A group of firefighters were in the right place at the right time on Tuesday. Officials said a woman went into cardiac arrest at Meijer’s in Urbana. Three Urbana firefighters were shopping there at the time. They got called over the intercom and rushed over to perform CPR.

Lieutenant Josh Ingold was one of the three firemen. He said this shows the importance of getting trained to save lives.

“Cardiac arrests can happen at anytime, anywhere. If you’re the first one there, you’re with somebody that might go into cardiac arrest, you could keep their circulation going,” he said, “because all the blood in their system, when they do go into cardiac arrest, still has oxygen. So, you’re able to circulate the blood for them and give the best possible outcome.”

The American Heart Association says about 20% of cardiac arrests happen in public spaces. If you’re looking for a place to take CPR classes, click here.
