About 25 volunteers pitched in on Thursday to prepare a new affordable housing complex in downtown Oxnard for its first residents before they arrive next week.

Central Terrace is a five-story apartment complex with 87 units located in the 200 block of East Sixth Street. Construction for the $45 million project began in July 2022.

“It’s an absolutely beautifully designed building that will serve residents incredibly well,” said Dalit Shlapobersky, executive vice president for Many Mansions, a Thousand Oaks-based nonprofit overseeing the project. It’s designed with residents' well-being in mind.”

Volunteers on Thursday took donated goods including sheets, plates and cleaning supplies to make the one-bedroom apartments move-in ready, she said.

Thirty-five of the units were being set aside for homeless individuals and families, officials have said. Some of the complex's new residents may arrive with few or no belongings.

Residents will start moving in next week and a grand opening is set for July 25, Shlapobersky said.

Volunteers from U.S. Bank, the Ventura County Credit Union, West Ventura County Business Alliance and other organizations participated.
